devider 5 Tips to Help Avoid Extra Fees When Using PrePaid Debit Cards

Extra fees got you down? Learn how to avoid extra fees when using your prepaid debit cards!

1) Keep Up Monthly Minimum Income Deposit and/or Transaction Amounts and Avoid Monthly Maintenance Fees
A lot of debit card companies will NOT charge you a fee if you deposit "x" amount of dollars per month onto the debit card, and/or if you use your debit card "x" amount of times, per month. Make sure to keep up with your specific monthly minimums in order to save money on monthly maintenance fees.

2) Get Cash Back at the Point of Purchase/Sale as Opposed to Using an ATM
It is important to understand the fees associated withdrawing cash from your account. Some debit card companies charge less money or no money for cash back on a purchase, as opposed to getting cash from an ATM. Many debit card companies will not only charge you money to use an ATM, they will also charge you for balance inquires made through an ATM and/or decline fees, if you don't have sufficient funds to cover the withdrawal. Even if some debit cards claim they don't charge ATM fees, you must realize that the third-party, or the owner of the ATM, will still charge you a usage fee. However if you do need cash, a good alternative is to get money back on a purchase you make. Most debit card companies do not charge or charge a fee under $1 for pin transactions, which is much less than getting charged separately and a higher fee to use an ATM.

3) Use Signature Purchases Instead of Pin Purchases A lot of debt card companies prefer that you use a signature with purchase as opposed to a pin transaction. So if you don't need cash back, it is always best to sign for your purchases as opposed to using a pin, as most all debit cards will NOT charge a fee for signature purchases.

4) Inquire Questions Online or Through an Automated Service If you have questions on your debit card try to find the answer online or call the AUTOMATED toll-free number. Most debit cards will not charge you to use these methods of help, however, if you are connected to a live operator you may be charged a customer service fee. Some debit card companies allow one "free" person-to-person call per month, to accommodate routine matters.

5) Cards with Free Money Upload/ Direct Deposit Options If possible, it is always a good idea to link your prepaid debit cards with a direct deposit from your employer. This allows money to be securely transferred on to your card for free from your employer. If your employer does not used direct deposit, try finding a card that utilizes a retailer with little or no fees associated with uploading money, otherwise you may spend more than $5 every time you need to reload your debit card.

Because all prepaid debit cards differ, it is ALWAYS important to read the terms and conditions of your specific debit card product before signing up for any offer. These steps DO NOT apply to every product available, so check directly with your debit card company for an exact breakdown of fees and services.
